Soup Diet (Page 2 of 4)
Phase 1: One-Day Purification Diet
This phase restricts solid food for one day. During this time you will consume only fluids in the form of juices, water, and soup broth. Many people repeat this diet plan once a month to maintain metabolic efficiency.
The purpose of this phase is to totally flush all toxins from the digestive system and to rejuvenate all organs involved in the digestive process. This purification process increases the efficiency of organ function; as well as lowers blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and resting heart rate. Adjusting to a lower caloric intake may produce certain symptoms (anxiety, sleeplessness, feeling of cold, hunger, nausea, fatigue, headache, muscle ache, and/or constipation). Most people do not experience any of these symptoms; but those who do, find that these symptoms disappear within 12 to 24 hours. Empirical evidence suggests that those who experience the most discomfort are those who need this cleansing the most.
A study by Brouns, Saris & Rehrer, in 1987, found that when foods were converted to liquid (i.e. juice and soup) they exited the stomach up to four hours earlier than solid foods; thus, reducing stress placed on the digestive track and increasing nutrient absorption. Liquid meals have been found to reduce food sensitivities and promote true body fat losses as opposed to fluid losses. Finally, a balanced liquid diet offers you convenience and nutritional control.
After you have completed this phase your body will be able to absorb and assimilate solid foods easier. You will feel better and be highly motivated to continue with the next phase of your nutritional plan.
What can you consume?
- Drink a variety of unsweetened fruit juices and low-sodium vegetable juices.
- Drink Products-made vegetable soup broth (hot or cold). Vegetable soup broth can be made by simmering various vegetables (potatoes, carrots, string beans, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, turnips, cabbage, onions) in water for about 30 minutes, after first bringing it to a boil. Strain-out all solid food residue before consuming.
- Drink herbal teas if you desire. Peppermint, rose hips, and chamomile teas taste good.
- Peppermint is refreshing, especially after a workout. A rose hip has vitamin C, which is used in the detoxifying process. Chamomile makes for a fine nonalcoholic nightcap.
- Drink ice cold water.
Daily Eating Instructions:
- Drink a warm glass of water with lemon juice when you first get up in the morning. Add a touch of honey if it is too sour. This drink will aid in the purification process.
- Drink four to six glasses of “ice cold” water between liquid meals.
- During the day, drink as much unsweetened juice or vegetable broth as you desire.
- Follow your vitamin and mineral prescription.
- Up to 4 cups of coffee is allowed.
- Do not overeat.
- Eat only when you are hungry or every two or three hours.
