Food Exchange System

To master the task of meeting your nutritional needs and losing weight, you may find it useful to use the Food Exchange System. Exchange systems are popular among careful diet planners, particularly people who wish to control calories as well as to obtain certain nutrients in desired quantities.

Six Food Groups
The exchange system is divided into six food groups which have been grouped together because of similar caloric content and percentage of car-bohydrates, proteins, and fats. Each food group is associated with a given number of calories and a specific serving size as listed in the table below:

Food Groups Serving Size Calories Per Serving
Srarch and Breads 1 each - 1 slice 80
Vegetables 1/2 cup - 4 oz. 25
Fruits & Juices 1 each - 6 oz. 60
Milk Products 1 cup - 8 oz. 90
Meat and Cheese 1 oz. 55
Fats 1 Tsp. 45

The exchange system pays strict attention to portions. Only if you measure a portion correctly do you obtain the number of calories and amounts of energy nutrients intended.
