Lapse and Relapse Management for Weight Control

“I did it again,” “I binged again,” “I feel terrible,” a chronic dieter confided. Disappointment, frustration and self-condemnation are common in dieters who find themselves in a lapse or relapse.

The term relapse describes the end result of a loss of control that results in defeat for dieters. It does not have to happen. Many a relapse begins with just a lapse, and dieters need to understand the difference in kind and degree. A dieter in a lapse can take corrective action and thus regain control. Without any action a lapse can lead to relapse -- gaining weight due to total abandonment of the weight-control program.

It helps to monitor your behavior in regards to your weight maintenance plan. Set specific tolerance ranges for lapses, and take action should you exceed them.
